Movie review- X-Men: First Class

Rented X-Men: First Class last night and it was pretty good. I've always loved superheroes and the X-Men were always some of my favorite characters growing up watching the cartoons and reading comics. This movie is the story of how Professor X and Magneto started The X-Men & The Brotherhood of Mutants. If you’ve ever watched the movies or tv shows and especially read the comics you’ll know that it’s referenced all the time that Professor X and Magneto were once friends. Most of the movie was set in the 60's and they did a great job making it look like it was with great sets, cool wardrobes and hair. I also enjoyed seeing what mutants they chose for this movie. I think they were trying to branch away from the older movies by leaving out some major characters and including who they did;

Charles Xavier / Professor X played by James McAvoy.
Professor X discovered his telepathic ability on his own as a boy growing up in a wealthy family and believes that mutants and humans can live together peacefully.

Magneto / Erik Lahnsherr played by Michael Fassbender
Magneto's powers of magnetism were triggered when he was a prisoner in a concentration camp and his mother was taken away from him. He has a lot of rage and that experience is his belief that humans will ultimately round up mutants and not allow them to live.

Sebastian Shaw played by Kevin Bacon
Shaw got his powers by experimenting on mutants in WWII and is an all around bad guy. His powers are to absorb power and then release it back as a huge weapon. There was a cool scene where he blew up a big building. I can only imagine that 6 degrees to Kevin Bacon fans are stoked with what I image are all kinds of new connections because of this movie.

Found a screen shot of him blowing stuff up

Moira MacTaggert played by Rose Byrne
She's not a mutant but a CIA agent who is trying to avert a nuclear war with Russia and ends up thinking Professor X is pretty adorable. She's also really pretty.

Raven / Mystique played by Jennifer Lawrence
One of the all time coolest super heroes. She's able to shape shift into anyone and in her normal form is blue. She struggles with having to hide who she really is in order to fit in. Started off as Charles Xavier's only friend but agrees more with Magneto and the Brotherhood.

Janos Quested / Riptide played by Alex Gonzalez
I wasn't familiar with the character going into the movie but he plays a bad guy aligned with Shaw who can create these tornado cloud things. He didn't talk a lot.

Azazel played by Jason Flemyng
He's a demon who can teleport. Also not a big talker and is a bad guy for Shaw. Well after the movie he does it with Mystique and they have Nightcrawler who looks like his dad but is blue, that's how you know who his mom is.
Creepy;

Here;

Gone;

Angel Salvadore played by Zoe Kravitz
I had no idea that there was a child by Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet or that she's so hot but it makes sense. Hard to find two more attractive people to be your parents. I'm still a little confused by this character, in the original comics Angel was a son of some rich parents locked away in his penthouse apartment because of his shameful angel like wings. Here Angel is a stripper who's tattoo'd delicate wings become real and she spits wads of fire. Not that I'm complaining mind you but still confusing.

Emma Frost played by January Jones
I love the character of Emma Frost. She's a bitch but still good, is probably the third strongest telepath behind Prof. X and Jean Grey but can turn into solid Diamonds. My only issue with the movie from a powers perspective is that she was cracked a bit in diamond form which is ridiculous. My only other issue is that January Jones just isn't hot. I've been fooled before with her and don't want to sound mean but I don't get why she's on the top of some peoples hot list. Maybe she looks better natural.

She looked better as diamonds

Hank McCoy / Beast played by Nicholas Hoult
Beast is awesome, he's a genius who can hang upside down by his feet, is super strong, has super agility and major hang ups about his looks. Especially when he turns blue and furry. He makes everything technical for the X-Men and one of my favorite characters in the TV show growing up.

Sean Cassidy / Banshee played by Caleb Landry Jones
Banshee has the power to produce sonic screams that can break stuff, make him fly or use as sonar underwater. They did a good job with him in this movie where he's just a kid with Prof. X helping him to gain control of his powers. Kid looks a little like Ron from Harry Potter.

Armando Munoz / Darwin played by Edi Gathegi
Darwin is a cool character where his power is that he rapidly adapts to survive. So if he's being hit with something he produces a hard shell or if he's underwater he produces gills to breath, etc.

Alex Summers / Havok played by Lucas Till
Alex Summers is the brother of Scott Summers / Cyclops and his power is also that he absorbs solar power but he shoots out power from his body instead of his eyes. Beast makes him a suit so he can focus it as a beam out of his chest that is pretty cool. The special effects with his character were some of the coolest for the powers along with Magneto
